Helmuth Conz - Instructor Profile

Hellmuth Conz, though a German by birth has called India home for over a decade now. A photographer with an ardent love for India, he has been inspired by its vibrant aura, culture, colours and people. India has been his muse for as long as he can remember.

Hellmuth’s love story with the camera began at a very young age. At the age of fourteen he began formal training and graduated in photography from the University of Hamburg. People have always been his favorite subject, with their varying moods, gestures and expressions. He also loves architecture - the way light plays with the elements of the building, differently at different times of the day captures his imagination. Never one to sit at a desk, he freelanced as a photographer for a long time before taking up teaching. Today, he is a mentor and teacher to many budding photographers in Bangalore. The Meister is a veteran at exhibits and can be seen regularly at shows in Bangalore alongside his students, encouraging their initial attempts.

Photography to Hellmuth is more than just taking pictures. In his words, photographs are visual verses that awaken forgotten memories and inspire dreams. He believes that it is not the camera but the person behind it, who can capture the essence of his subject and create magic. He says it’s just not about learning the technical aspects but nurturing one’s creative side as well. He encourages his students to learn on analog as well as digital cameras.

Hellmuth teaches at Christ College, Mount Carmel College, Garden City College and Shrishti School of Art and Technology in Bangalore. Hellmuth leads the Photography ‘ONTHEMOVE’ trips/workshops along with our travel experts and is working on alternative photography concepts for “getoff ur ass” .
